The Mesoscale Group

The Mesoscale Group is responsible for the development and support of mesoscale versions of the GEM model and of the related physics appropriate to those scales. In collaboration with the Development Section of the CMC, it also insures the technology transfer to the operations.

The mesoscale versions of GEM currently under development include:

  • the Regional model (15-km version with improved physics);
  • HIMAP (10-km version);
  • the Global Mesoscale model (35-km version with improved physics);
  • the Limited-Area Model (LAM for high-resolution local applications).

The Mesoscale Group is in charge of the maintenance and users support for the GEM dynamics and the CMC/RPN physics software libraries. The Mesoscale Group is also involved in the development of verification tools at the mesoscale.

Recently, the Mesoscale Group has organized or collaborated to a number of national and international projects (e.g. COMPARE, MERMOZ, FIRE.ACE, CAGES,MAP (Canadian and European Web site). Participation to such field projects provide the detailed observations necessary to validate the physics parameterization schemes (surface processes, boundary layer exchanges, cloud dynamics,…).

The Mesoscale Group has established joint collaborations with several partners in Canada to conduct mesoscale research and development (ÉOLE Project, CWRP, LAM applications with the Regions,…).
