                         RESUME / ABSTRACT

The moist primitive equations are solved in curvilinear
coordinates on the cubed-sphere with a hybrid pressure
vertical coordinate using the Emanuel convective parameterization
for moist processes. We present an idealized simulation due to
Grabowski and Moncrieff (1994), of the large-scale organization of
equatorial convection in a state of radiative-convective quasi-
equilibrium on a constant sea-surface temperature (SST) aquaplanet.
The large-scale organization of convection within the equatorial
wave guide takes the form of MJO-like coherent structures. The
clustering of Gauss-Lobatto-Legendre quadrature points within spectral
elements poses a unique challenge both for moisture transport and
coupling dynamics to physical processes. To avoid the accumulation
of precipitation at spectral element boundaries, the horizontal
dissipation operators must be selectively tuned.
