                         RESUME / ABSTRACT


An overview of recent research on the wave/vortex dynamics of the
mesoscale range of the atmospheric energy spectrum will be presented.
The presence or absence of these dynamics in a variety of "realistic"
GCM, weather-prediction and boundary-layer models will also be discussed.
A few of these reproduce the correct spectrum while most do not.  It is
argued that this may be attributed to their numerics in the form of
insufficient vertical and/or temporal resolution.
