BENEFIT TO CANADIANS:

The Numerical Weather Prediction modelling component is the bedrock of the Environment Canada Environmental Prediction System. The research in progress at RPN will result in measurable improvements in areas of high-priority environmental prediction, and allow our Canadian partners to benefit from this important infrastructure for their environmental prediction activities:

  • Improved forecast and warnings using weather models and post-processing at all time and space scales.
  • Improvement in the forecast accuracy of precipitation quantity and type.
  • Improvement in the representation of atmospheric chemistry (CO, ozone, etc.) for air quality issues at regional and global scales.
  • Support to environmental prediction modelling with an atmospheric-hydrology and atmosphere-ocean coupled model.
  • Support to environmental prediction modelling for the high econometric profiled agricultural and road meteorology.

These accomplishments will reduce the impact of weather and related hazards on the Canadian health, safety and the economy. It will also affect the adaptation of the Canadian society to day-to-day and longer-term changes in the atmospheric, hydrologic and ice conditions.
